THE NEED TO WATCH AND PRAY

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:17)

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:12, 13)

Do we need to watch and pray? (By Pastor Jude Okwubune)

We live in a world where even our LORD Himself made us understand is full of evil. Such is our world in which a man’s enemies are even members of his own family.
We talk of the world in which all that glitters is taken to be the gold that it not necessarily is. In such a world, man needs the ability and wisdom to really excel and live out his dreams. This is the more reason we need to watch and pray.
Our Lord Jesus says that we who believe are sent as sheep in the midst of wolves for which He enjoined us to be as wise as the serpent and as innocent as doves (Matthew 10.16). Interesting, only the dove and the eagle are the birds that easily kill the serpent. We need be watchful in prayer to triumph over the wolves just as the sheep’s inseparable fellowship with the shepherd is her complete assurance of protection and provision in the presence of the wolves

  • Praying and watching brings us revelation and power (Jeremiah 33:3)
  • Praying and watching brings divine providence (John 16:23-24)
  • Praying and watching brings us peace and confidence in life (Psalm 56:2-4)
  • Watchful praying prospers the land and makes us prosperous (Proverbs 11:11, Jeremiah 29:7).

DISCUSSIONS:

  • What role does watching and praying play over an evil world?
  • Since we do not war against flesh and blood; how then can war in the spirit?
  • What is the role of wisdom in prayer watch?
