BIBLE STANDARD FOR TRUE PROPHECY 1 (By Pastor Jude Okwubune)

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(1st Peter 1:20, 21)
Prophecy has its origin from God and when we have not shown real interest in God and the things that interest God on earth: prayer, church life, compassion and respecting the dignity of others, seeking to receive anointing , prophetic or spiritual gifts from others often subject believers to lying spirits no matter how anointed the person may be. Prophecy also originates from the Holy Spirit, the flesh and satan, for this reason the bible urges us to test the spirits (1st Kings 22:20-22).
Ignore prophecy from one who is not under spiritual authority; if someone does not have the approval of your spiritual authority you are in danger. People who seek prophecy from distant or unknown prophets lack discipline; they are lazy and have no desire for the responsibility in prayer, bible study which is the very reason they are searching for sensationalism and magic wand Christianity: “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths” (2nd Timothy 4:3, 4). Do not accept a prophecy where there is no one to judge it, 1st Corinthians 14:29; 1st John4:1.

REVIVAL & RESTORATION: God reveals to redeem which is why prophecy is given for edification, sanctification and comfort, a prophecy that fills you with condemnation, fear and turmoil is not from God and should be ignored, God convicts unto repentance, the devil accuses unto condemnation.

MARIBOUND CONJECTURES: Prophecy that contains projections and guesses that do not come true is not from God as written in Deuteronomy 18:21-22.

INNER WITNESS: When a prophetic word does not bear witness to your spirit, it is not from God. The word of God for you will have the inner witness in you just as we are told,” the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16).You will have the conviction, assurance and peace within you that this is God speaking to you.

  • One major principle in understanding true prophecy is conviction not condemnation
  • Every prophecy is to be judged against scripture
  • Someone who is not under spiritual authority is a false prophet (1 Kings 22:23-28)
