BIBLE STANDARD FOR TRUE PROPHECY 3 (By Pastor Jude Okwubune)
“Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.” (1st Thessalonians 5:19-22)
God our Father wants us HIS children to avoid all extremes as He tells us in Ecclesiastes7:16-18, temperance is fruit of the Holy Spirit, to avoid dangerous compromise or goofy legalistic religiosity we must be in touch with God through prayer, fellowship and the study of God’s word. Only so can we discern the spirit that speaks and then avoid being deceived by the tricks of the enemy or the dismissing of true prophecy out of the fear of deception. God does not want us to douse the unction which the Holy Spirit places on us to function as HIS workmanship. That is why we need to be fit to test everything by HIS grace on us through fellowship, hear: “Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said,” (1st Corinthians 14:29).
NEWLIFE & PROMOTION: True prophecy is a tonic that injects vitality in the individual and body of believers, the word of God comes with life and power, Jesus is saying: “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). False prophecy produces condemnation, confusion, division, deception, destruction and despair. In 1997 a lady prophesied that a church will split and disperse in confusion and that the pastor will abandon the ministry before the end of that year, adding that if it did not happen, then God did not speak by her. 2011, the very Pastor is still pastoring the same church which has grown to have branches.
It must be said that prophecy can be piercing, profound, and bold, but in the end it brings repentance with the joy of the Lord, and produces healing, restoration and promotion with the deliverance that comes with a new life of obedience.
LIBERTY NOT OPPRESSION: True prophecy produces freedom and readiness to serve God in every form not bondage, oppression and depression in any form. The bible proclaims that the Lord is the Spirit and that wherever the Spirit of God is in operation, there is freedom (2nd Corinthians 3:17).
False prophecy breeds bondage, intimidation, fear, coercion and manipulation, but a true prophecy will bring conviction unto repentance from the body of sin and unproductive life: “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15).
